Based on the proven design principles of the 209 Class of submarines, plus some of the innovative features of the 212A class, HDW developed the 214 Class. 
It was eminently suitable for a broad spectrum of applications, both in shallow and deep water areas. 
Due to its flexible combination of sensors and weapons and the fuel cell power plant that is independent of external air, the 214 Class is predestined for missions against enemy submarines and surface vessels, reconnaissance and surveillance, support for operational units and special missions. 
The fuel cell power plant enables the submarine to remain under water for much longer. 
This new type of engine and the reduction in the overall signatures ensure that the 214 Class vessels are extremely difficult to locate. 
At present there are seven 214 Class units under construction: four for the Greek Navy (built by the Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems Werften HDW in Kiel and the Hellenic Shipyards in Greece) and three for the Navy of South Korea (Shipyard: Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea).
