The British DeHavilland Mosquito proved highly successful and invulnerable in night bombing missions, so the Germans were forced to come up with a repellant to counter it. The solution was the Focke Wulf Ta154, a twin-engine attack aircraft with a wooden airframe. The Ta154 was to be employed as a night fighter, but the program was eventually scrapped with just seven pre-production and 12 production aircraft built. Meanwhile, towards the end of the war, the Luftwaffe was intent on using “Mistelgespanne” (composite aircraft) to attack large enemy targets like bridges and ships. This required cheap airframes, and one popular composite pairing was of an Fw 190 and a Ta154, where the latter could be used as an explosives carrier. A total of six of these “Sprengstofftra"ger Beethoven” combinations are thought to have been produced, though Dragon has just added another!

This fantastic new plastic kit from Dragon features the Ta154 with its Mistel warhead as well as an attendant Fw 190. The kit has brand new parts such as the warhead, and all elements have been produced to Dragon’s highest standards. The front landing gear has been carefully and subtly rendered, as well as the struts that connect the Fw 190 to its “flying bomb”. For maximum detail, the kit widely employs photo-etched parts, plus transparent plastic parts are used where appropriate. Various options are open to modelers, as for example, the engine that can be assembled with or without its exhaust cover. This is a spectacular model of a highly unusual subject, and it will take pride of place in any model aircraft collection.
